Abstract: A field experiment was carried out on ziea maize plants (Third hybrid 310) grown on a clayey soil at Sids Agric. Res. Station through summer season 2009 to study the effect of sulphur application alone or in combination with organic manure (FYM) on plant available nutrients, soil moisture retentions and the productivity of maize. Sulphur was applied at the rates of 0, 500 and 1000 kg/ fed. and organic manure was applied at the rates of 0, 10 and 20 m3/ fed. The obtained resultes showed that the available contents of NPK in soil were increased with S application alone , and these increases were more pronounced when FYM was added. However, application of sulphur and FYM together achieved the highest values of available NPK in soil. Also, resultes showed that the values of soil moisture retentions (field capacity, wilting point and available water) were increased. The best treatment was found to be a mixture of 1000 kg S / fed and 20 m3 FYM / fed. This treatment reflected its positive effect on the grain yield of maize, where the highest increase in the grain yield reached 26.35 %. Data also indicated that addition of a mixure S with FYM to the studied clayey soil markedly increased the contents of NPK in maize grains, particularly at the highest rates of both elemental sulphur and organic manure.
