Abstract: Arsenic (As) and cobalt (Co) are a toxic metalloid present in industrial waste water that threaten human health seriously. In this study, the batch experiments were conducted in order to investigate the removal of As and cobalt (II) ions from aqueous solutions on goethite and Zero valent iron (nZVI ) . The influence of initial solution pH, adsorbent dosage, initial As & Co concentration and contact time, was studied in order to establish the optimum experimental conditions for adsorption process. The equilibrium concentrations of (As & Co) were highly fitted to the linear form of adsorption isotherm equations of Freundlich with coefficients of determination (r2) of ( 0.987 , 0.969) and (0.933 and 0.974) on goethite and (nZVI ) respectively.
The removal efficiencies of arsenate decreased with the increasing initial pH values. As well as the maximum adsorption was observed at zero time .While, the adsorption of Co showed an opposite behavior compared to arsenate; the removal efficiencies of cobalt increase with increasing initial pH value. Concerning, increasing adsorbent dosage causes a decrease of removal efficiency for both As and Co on goethite and (nZVI ). While, the removal efficiency increased with the increase of the initial As and Co concentration. Nano structured (nZVI ) is better adsorbent than goethite A direct function of total iron particle surface area, their performance is expected to be superior to that of goethite for the investigated elements
