Abstract: Efficienciesoflocalbacterialisolatesinmalathiondegradationwereinvestigated.Fivebacterial isolates btainedfromagriculturalwastewaterwereselectedduetotheirabilitytogrowinminimalsalt media, uppliedwith250ppmmalathionassolesourceofcarbonandphosphorus.Thepurifiedbacterial isolates (MOS-1,MOS-2,MOS-3,MOS-4andMOS-5)werecharacterisedandidentifiedusingacom- bination ofcellularprofile(SDS-PAGE),geneticmakeupprofile(RAPD-PCR),andmorphologicaland biochemical characteristics.Fourbacterialisolates(MOS-1,MOS-2,MOS-3andMOS-4)withidentical genetic characteristicswereidentifiedas Enterobacteraerogenes, whereasisolateMOS-5wasidentifiedas Bacillus thuringiensis. Thedegradationrateofmalathioninliquidculturewasestimatedduring15days of incubationfortheisolateMOS-5of B. thuringiensis. Slightlymorethan50%oftheinitialmalathion wasdecomposedwithin3days.Themalathionconcentrationdecreasedtoalmost17%intheinoculated medium after10daysincubation,whilemorethan91%oftheinitialmalathionwasdegradedafter15days.
